How Do You Shower While on the Road?
This is a question we receive almost daily and one of the people’s biggest concerns about mobile living. Through this post, I’ll detail the best ways to shower living life on the road.
Van
Some van’s come equipped with an indoor or outdoor shower (or both!). For our Ford Transit van build, we added a Camplux shower off of our garage space in the back. We picked this based on our choice to use propane in our van. Our 20 lbs propane tank directs to our stovetop and outdoor shower. We choose not to do an electric heater since our shower is outside and we have a limited battery capacity. Our outdoor shower works for us since we surf, it’s an easy rinse once we come back from the ocean and saves us space inside our van.
If your van doesn’t have a shower, as our last didn’t, we chose to utilize beach showers along with the options below
Gyms
Many gym’s have nationwide memberships with convenient locations. Common picks include:
YMCA (ask about nationwide memberships at local branch)
Our personal preference while traveling is Planet Fitness, as the membership cost is low at $25 for two people, locations are easily accessible, and the bathrooms are reliably clean and often renovated.
Check in with your insurance provider, they may have an incentive or aid for a gym membership. My insurance offers OnePass that provides discounts on local and nationwide gyms, meaning we are able to belong to many gyms for a low cost!
ClassPass
If you enjoy fitness classes at a discounted rate, Class Pass is right for you. It displays studios that have showers. Some studios even provide soaps and towels. It’s a great way to connect with the local community when on the road
Campgrounds
Many campgrounds offer showers/locker rooms. Most use quarters or some type of coin to activate the water. Some campgrounds may allow you to use their shower without a reservation.
Recreation Centers
Throughout the US, there are recreation or community centers that house locker rooms and showers. Frequently, they include indoor sport rooms such as racketball, climbing walls, pools, and general fitness equipment. Daily admission can vary depending on location, we typically have paid $5-12 dollars per person for a day pass. Our favorite state for recreation centers is Colorado.
