How to Choose a Day Hike

Hiking is a common activity for Austin and I on the road. We utilize 2 main systems when choosing hikes: AllTrails and local recommendations. Below, I’ll list a few hacks to help choose the best hike based on your preferences.

AllTrails is the number one hiking app on the market. The app features the ability to download maps, save lists, and track your hike (even without service). You can enter specific parameters for type of activity, difficulty, length, etc to find the right hike for you. For example, I can filter my search by selecting: hiking; moderate; 2+ miles; dog friendly; 4+ stars. One great addition to the app is to find specific ventures, such as the ability to select “hot spring” or “waterfall”under more filters.

AllTrails is a free app with the option to upgrade to AllTrails+ for additional features ($35.99 per year). Check out my lists here.

In addition to AllTrails, we recommend to supplement hikes with recommendations from locals and travelers you meet. One of the best benefits of van life is that you can park overnight nearby activities you’d like to partake in that day. This means you can travel leisurely and stay in a location as long as you’d like. Take advantage of this. Speak to the people you meet and keep an open mind on their recommendations.
